Enrollment Guide for Doctoral Students of Academic Degree
Involved in 2015 National Examination

The selection methods of doctoral students of academic degree include open recruitment, application-audition, successive postgraduate and doctoral programs of study and directly selection from undergraduates. Departments (Institutes) implementing application-audition are Faculty of Education, School of Psychology, Department of Physics, Department of Astronomy, School of Life Science, Global Change and Earth System Science Research Institute, School of Chemistry, Institute of Brain and Cognitive Science, etc.. Only 2nd -year graduates of Academic degree in BNU can apply for successive postgraduate and doctoral programs of study, and the program is usually performed in December each year. As for undergraduates directly studying for doctorate, BNU mainly admits outstanding fresh graduates from key universities, and usually performs the program from September to October (click here to see the admission plan).
The enrollment guide of the open recruitment are announced as follows:
I. Enrollment Number
1. The enrollment numbers of various departments listed include doctorates directly selected from undergraduates and students studying for successive postgraduate and doctoral program of study, but do not contain any special plans.
2. The enrollment numbers of each supervisor are marked or illustrated in the major directory. Apart from the supervisors whose enrollment number is clearly identified, other supervisors will decide the numbers during the enrollment stage according to his/her research tasks, the quality of students, and the total enrollment number of his/her department (or institute).
II. Admission Requirements
1. Applicants must abide by the Constitution and Laws of the State, and be willing to make contributions for the construction of socialist modernization with a good morality.
2.Education background of the applicants must meet one of the following requirements: having acquired a Master degree (before the preliminary exam), or being the fresh graduate of master degree (getting the master’s degree certificate and diploma before the entrance), or being qualified with the same educational level, or having acquired the doctor’s degree.
Applicants with the same educational level must meet the following requirements: 1) having acquired the bachelor’s degree for six years or above (from acquiring the bachelor’ degree to the admission day); 2)having published at least 4 papers as first author on the academic journals in terms of the specialized field he/she applies; 3) if having presided over the major scientific research projects of provincial and ministerial level or above, the published articles can be discounted, but not fewer than 2; 3)having completing the professional courses and elective course of master’s degree and getting qualified results.
Without master's degree diploma, professional masters only with degree certificate can only apply as the applicant with the same educational level, and must meet the requirements above.
Postgraduates are not allowed to study for 2 or more degrees at the same time, no matter they are on the same level or not.
The academic certificate acquired from outside of China needs to be accredited by the Service Center of the Ministry of Education.
3.The applicant must be recommended by 2 associate professors (or equivalent) related to the subject he/ she has applied.
4. Physical condition of the applicants must conform to the requirement of the Physical Examination Guidance of the Enrollment of Higher Learning Institutions.
III. Application
(Notice: Applicants should read the admission requirements carefully before application and then apply online after being sure of meeting all requirements. Please fill out the information accurately when apply online. Admission will be denied if applicants do not meet the requirements or cheated. The application qualification will be examined during the admission stage.)
1. Date of application: from November 12th, 2014 to December 12th, 2014. All applications are taken on line, the website link is http://graduate.bnu.edu.cn/bsbmindex.htm . Please check the relevant instructions to know the specific requirements and the procession during the online application. The application fee, 200 RMB, is paid online, and once paid, it will not be refunded.
2. Applicants must submit the following written materials to the postgraduate educational administration office of the applied department or institute before December 26th, 2014 according to the requirement. The related content of written material must be consistent with the information on the internet.
1) registration form (printed from the online registration system. Please upload the applicant’s electronic photo as required before printing, and sign on each page after printing);
2) two pieces of expert recommendation (download the empty form from the online registration system and ask the expert to fill in);
3) personal statement (download the empty form from the online registration system and fill in, and submit the electronic version to the system at the same time);
4) the applicant’s publicly published academic papers, patents and other research achievements ( original or copy). At the same time, the applicant needs to submit the published representative academic papers to the online registration system, at maximum 3 papers;
5) a copy of master’s degree certificate (if any) 【The academic certificate acquired from outside of China needs to be accredited by the Service Center of the Ministry of Education.】, a copy of graduation certificate (postgraduate with only professional degree certificate and applicants with the same educational level are not included), a master’s thesis, and the original master’s course transcript ( provided and sealed by the postgraduate educational department of the institutions where the applicant study for master’s degree, or copied and sealed by the file management department. The same below);
Fresh graduates only need to submit the original master’s course transcript. After being admitted, if the applicant can not get the master’s degree certificate and the diploma, his/her qualification for admission will be canceled.
Applicants with the same educational level should submit the bachelor’s degree certificate, a copy of the undergraduate diploma and the original master’s course transcript.
IV. Entrance Examination
The entrance examination includes preliminary examination and secondary examination.
Subjects of preliminary examination: foreign language (not including listening) and two professional courses. Please check the major directory to know the specific subjects. We do not provide the reference books, please choose the related books for studying.
Date of preliminary exam: March 28th and 29th , 2015
Place: Beijing Normal University, please refer to the admission card for specific places.
The admission card will not be sent to the applicant. Please download it from the website of graduate school in BNU one week before the examination.
The secondary examination may be held right after the preliminary, or may be held after announcing the result of the preliminary examination. Please check the specific plan on the website of graduate school in BNU one week before the examination.
V. Admission
Admission list will be decided according to the scores of the preliminary and secondary examinations, the usual performance on study, the achievement on work and ideological and political performance, etc. Admission will stick to the principle of admitting the top and well-rounded examinees.
Admission includes directional employment and non-directional employment. For the former type, both personnel archives and hukou will not be transferred to BNU and the students must go back to the designated workplace at the time of graduation. For the latter type, the personnel archives must be transferred to BNU and the students can choose whether to transfer hukou to BNU or not. After graduation and after deciding the work institution within the specified time, the student will be dispatched by the university according to the national employment policy.
Doctoral students must take full-time study for 3 years. Applicants in Beijing applying for directional employment will not be provided with accommodation.
The applicants do not need to submit the written materials that permit the applicants to apply by their present institutions. Applicants need to handle all the problems resulted from admission in their institutions by themselves. Applicants are accountable for every possibility of not being able to take the secondary examination or not being admitted.
Physical examination will be held at the time school starts. Those who fail physical examination will be denied admission.
Applicants will be denied admission when found cheating and the student status will be revoked for those who have registered. Applicants are accountable for the above situation.
VI. Tuition and Reward and Grant System
1.All doctoral students with academic degree need to pay the tuition. Ordinary doctoral tuition standard is 10,000 RMB per academic year, a total of 30,000 RMB for 3 years. The annual tuition is paid in the first semester of each academic year. Undergraduate for direct doctorate pay the tuition according to the standard of the masters with academic degree in the first 2 academic years, 8000 RMB per academic year, and pay according to the standard of ordinary doctorates in the latter 3 academic years.
2. A new reward and grant system has been adopted since 2014. The system includes basic grants, assistant allowance, outstanding freshman scholarship, outstanding graduate scholarship, outstanding achievement award, and special scholarship, etc. Please find the details in Plan of Rewards and Grants for Postgraduates of BNU.
The postgraduates with a master’s or doctoral degree cannot apply for the scholarships or grants above.
Undergraduates for direct doctorate enjoy reward and grant of masters with academic degree in the first 2 academic years, and enjoy reward and grant of doctorates with academic degree in the latter 3 academic years.
In addition to the scholarship, we also set up other awards and funding projects such as doctoral students’ short-term study abroad (including participating in foreign academic conferences), so as to award and sponsor all the studies and research of the outstanding doctorates.
Since 2007, BNU selects from key disciplines about 150 postgraduates to go abroad, to take doctoral degree or to take joint training each year. Postgraduates with non-directional employment can apply to go abroad to take doctoral degree. For more information, please visit our website.
VII. Others
1.Enrollment information will be published online. Applicants can find all the information about the admission of recommended exemption graduates, admission, preliminary examination score, minimum passing score, secondary examination arrangement and admission list, etc on the home page of Graduate School of Beijing Normal University (Link: http://graduate.bnu.edu.cn). Please follow instantly.
2.BNU will not organize any auxiliary classes. The admission office will neither provide past examination nor sell reference books.
