2016年1月6日,在Plos One上发表了题为“Olfaction Contributes to Pelagic Navigation in a Coastal Shark”的研究文章。文章指出动物如何航行不断移动和视觉上均匀的远洋环境一直以来是一个奥秘。作者在文章中详细的讨论了沿海鲨鱼是如何借助嗅觉来完成其远洋航行。科学家之前假设鸟类和鲨鱼都是借助气味来实现导航。作者强调这是第一次实验研究证明嗅觉有助于在鲨鱼的远洋导航。同时,作者推测由于流体三维化工大气和海洋之间的相似性,进一步的研究比较可能促成一个统一的范式来解释游动和飞行动物其非凡的导航能力。
